Icon of Saint Simeon the God-Receiver. Orthodox Christian Icon

This sacred icon depicts Saint Simeon the God-Receiver, a righteous elder who, according to the Gospel of Luke (Luke 2:25), was chosen by God to witness the coming of the Messiah before his death. Simeon was one of the 72 scholars translating the Hebrew Scriptures into Greek under the commission of Ptolemy II Philadelphus. While translating Isaiah 7:14, he doubted the prophecy of the Virgin Birth until an angel assured him of its truth.

Guided by the Holy Spirit, Simeon came to the Jerusalem Temple on the 40th day after Christ’s birth, where he recognized the Infant Jesus as the awaited Savior. Taking Him into his arms, he proclaimed the famous words: “Now, Lord, let Your servant depart in peace, for my eyes have seen Your salvation.” (Luke 2:29-32).

Saint Simeon lived for 360 years and was later venerated as a holy elder. His relics were transferred to Constantinople in the 6th century. This icon beautifully captures his divine encounter, symbolizing faith, prophecy, and the fulfillment of God’s promise.
