Icon of the Holy Great Martyr Marina (Margarita, Margaret) of Antioch (Beating the devil)

Icon of Saint Marina (Margaret) of Antioch Defeating the Devil

This wooden icon is a replica of the famous 1857 icon by Lazaros from Athens, preserved in the Byzantine Museum. It depicts the life and martyrdom of Saint Marina of Antioch, also known as Margaret, a revered great martyr in Christian tradition.

About Saint Marina

Saint Marina was born in Antioch (modern Turkey) into a pagan priest’s family. Orphaned as a child, she was raised by her nurse, who introduced her to Christianity. Upon learning of her Christian faith, her father disowned her.

During Emperor Diocletian’s persecution of Christians (284–305), Marina, at the age of 15, was arrested and subjected to brutal torture for refusing to renounce her faith. Despite the tortures, she remained steadfast in her belief and prayed for divine help.

A defining moment of her story involved a confrontation with the devil, who appeared to her in the form of a serpent and later as a demon. Through her prayers and the sign of the cross, Saint Marina defeated the demon, physically subduing and striking him with a hammer. This dramatic victory over evil symbolizes her unshakable faith and divine strength.

Ultimately, she was martyred by beheading after enduring severe torment. Her relics became objects of veneration, with parts of them preserved on Mount Athos and in Italy.
