Wooden Icon of Saint Leo the First (Great) Pope

Leo the First (the Great) was pontiff in Rome in 440-461. Saint Leo, like a true shepherd, tirelessly defended Orthodox teaching from the Manichaean and Eutychian heresies. He took a personal part in the condemnation of the heresy of Eutyches at the Fourth Ecumenical Council in the city of Chalcedon. In 452, Saint Leo, by the power of his word, kept Attila, the leader of the Huns, from destroying Rome, and in 455 he convinced Genseric, the king of the Vandals, not to shed blood and not to set Rome on fire.

For his piety and successful defense of Orthodoxy, he was called “The Great.” He died in 461, leaving behind a message to Flavian, Patriarch of Constantinople, about the two natures of Jesus Christ - Divine and human. In addition, about 100 of his simple but powerful sermons and about 140 letters to various persons, rich in psychological observations, have reached us.

The relics of Saint Leo rest in the chapel named after him in the Vatican Cathedral in Rome.
