Icon of Saint Julian the Hospitaller (the "Almsgiver" or "Feeder of the Poor")

Saint Julian the Hospitaller, sometimes called Julian the Almsgiver or Julian the Merciful, is venerated as the patron of travelers, the poor, and all who offer shelter to those in need. His name reflects a life devoted entirely to hospitality and mercy — feeding the hungry, sheltering wanderers, and caring for the sick.

Born into a noble family, Julian was a young married man of a jealous temperament when, while out hunting, he received a vision foretelling that he would kill his own mother and father. Fleeing this fate, he moved far from home — yet the tragedy still found him. Returning unexpectedly one day and discovering two figures asleep in his own bed, he believed his wife had betrayed him and, in a fit of rage, killed the pair, only to learn afterward that they were his own parents, who had arrived to visit while he was away. Overwhelmed with horror at what he had done, Julian vowed to spend the rest of his life atoning through works of mercy.

Together with his wife, he made a pilgrimage and, upon their return, built a hospital, dedicating the rest of their lives to caring for travelers and the sick. The hospital stood near a dangerous river crossing, where many pilgrims and travelers risked drowning, and Julian took it upon himself to ferry them safely across and nurse those in need of care. Tradition tells that one day a leper arrived seeking shelter; after Julian tended to him with great compassion, the stranger revealed himself to be an angel, announcing that God had granted Julian full absolution for his sins.

Through this life of humble service, Julian transformed his sorrow into an enduring legacy of charity, becoming a model of repentance, hospitality, and selfless love for the stranger. He is invoked as patron of travelers, pilgrims, innkeepers, ferrymen, and all those who devote themselves to sheltering and feeding others — a saint whose story reminds the faithful that even the deepest grief can be turned, through mercy, into a path of holiness.

His feast day is celebrated on February 12.

The original icon is from the 18th-19th century.
