Wooden Icon of Saint John the Merciful, Patriarch of Alexandria
The saint considered alms and good deeds to all those in need to be his main work. At the beginning of his patriarchal service, he ordered that the poor and wretched in Alexandria, who turned out to be over seven thousand people, be taken into account. The saint gave all these unfortunate people daily free food. Twice a week, on Wednesday and Friday, he went to the doors of the patriarchal cathedral and, sitting on the porch, received all those in need: he sorted out feuds, helped the offended, and distributed alms. Three times a week he visited hospitals, providing assistance to the suffering. At this time, Emperor Heraclius waged a difficult war with the Persian king Khosroes II. The Persians sacked and burned Jerusalem, taking many prisoners. Holy Patriarch John allocated a large part of the church treasury for their ransom.
The saint never refused those who asked and was known for his meek attitude towards people.
