Saint Hieromartyr Haralambos (Charalampius), Bishop of Magnesia in Thessaly. Wooden orthodox icon

Saint Haralambos served as bishop and priest to the Christian community of Magnesia in Asia Minor, near the river Meander, during the reign of the Roman emperor Septimius Severus. He was already 107 years old and had spent decades faithfully instructing the faithful in the truth and preaching Christ openly, undeterred by threats from the pagan authorities around him.

When he was denounced as a threat and brought before the governor Lucian, he answered the threats against him with striking boldness, declaring that nothing could please him more than to suffer for the sake of Christ, and inviting his tormentors to do their worst, confident that the power of his faith could not be overcome. He was subjected to horrific tortures — yet he responded to his tormentors not with anger but with gratitude, saying that their cruelty was renewing his spirit for eternal life.

Witnessing the elder's extraordinary endurance and the complete absence of malice in him, two soldiers guarding him, Porphyrius and Baptus, were themselves moved to confess Christ openly and were martyred alongside him. Word spread that the blind were receiving their sight and the lame were walking again through his prayers, and many throughout the region were abandoning idolatry to receive baptism, which only intensified the fury of the authorities against him.

At last, condemned to be beheaded, Saint Haralambos was granted a final vision as he prayed — the heavens opened, and he beheld Christ the Savior surrounded by a multitude of angels. In that moment he asked that the place where his relics would come to rest might be spared from famine and disease, and that it might know peace, abundance, and the salvation of souls. The Lord granted his request, and the saint's soul departed to heaven before the sword could fall upon him.

Saint Haralambos is venerated as a hieromartyr of extraordinary faith and endurance, and the faithful invoke his intercession for protection from plague, disease, and sudden death, as well as for the well-being and prosperity of the communities under his patronage.

His feast day is celebrated on February 10.
