Saint Gertrude of Nivelles (626–659) was a seventh-century Christian saint venerated in both the Catholic and Orthodox traditions, with her memory kept on March 17. As abbess of the monastery she founded at Nivelles, in present-day Belgium, she became known for her tireless charity, her hospitality toward travelers and pilgrims, and her deep learning and devotion to Scripture.

Saint Gertrude is most often recognized in iconography by the presence of cats, an association that grew gradually through centuries of popular tradition. In the Middle Ages, infestations of mice and rats posed a serious threat to harvests and to public health, and it was believed that Gertrude's intercession helped protect fields and granaries from these pests. Since cats are natural hunters of mice, the saint's image became closely tied to them over time. On some early depictions, mice climbing at her feet or along her robes carried a deeper spiritual meaning as well, symbolizing souls in purgatory or the earthly temptations overcome through faith; cats were later added beside her as a balancing symbol of vigilance and protection. In time, her reputation as a defender against rodents led the faithful to regard her more broadly as a patroness of household cats, and she is still invoked today by those who care for animals.

Because she lived before the Great Schism of 1054, Saint Gertrude belongs to the saints of the undivided Church. In recent years her name has appeared with increasing frequency in Orthodox calendars, particularly within dioceses of the Russian Orthodox Church in Western Europe, where she is honored as an example of ancient piety and merciful service to one's neighbor.

Saint Gertrude remains a beloved figure whose veneration unites the historical witness of the early Christian community with a tender popular tradition of care for God's smallest creatures.

Her feast day is celebrated on March 17.
