Icon of the Saint Martyr Elizabeth (Elisaveta) Fedorovna Romanova
The activities of the Venerable Martyr Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna, a princess of Hesse-Darmstadt, who converted to Orthodoxy and founded the Martha and Mary Monastery of Mercy in Moscow, were diverse. She was always distinguished by her personal involvement.
For all her active involvement in affairs, Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna maintained a prayerful attitude. Not all monasteries of that time were engaged in Jesus prayer. Saint Elizabeth was her "doer" and even — at least one letter has been preserved — advised her relatives to pray this prayer.
