It is the icon of Saint Basil of Ostrog (Sveti Vasilije Ostroški), one of the most revered saints of the Serbian Orthodox Church and a great miracle-worker whose relics remain incorrupt to this day in the Ostrog Monastery in Montenegro.
✨ Life of the Saint
Saint Basil was born as Stojan Jovanović in 1610 in the village of Mrkonjići in Herzegovina. From his youth, he was drawn to monastic life and took vows at the Monastery of the Dormition in Trebinje, receiving the name Basil. His deep piety, wisdom, and gift of healing quickly became known throughout the region. In 1639, he was consecrated as Bishop of Zahum and Herzegovina.
During the difficult period of Ottoman rule, Saint Basil was a steadfast defender of Orthodox Christians, providing spiritual guidance and material help to those suffering persecution. After being forced to leave his episcopal seat, he withdrew to the remote Ostrog cliff in Montenegro, where he lived in a small cave carved into the sheer rock face, devoting himself entirely to prayer and asceticism.
Saint Basil reposed in the Lord on April 29, 1671. His holy relics were found to be incorrupt and began working miracles immediately. To this day, they are venerated in the Upper Monastery of Ostrog, built directly into the mountainside, and countless pilgrims—Orthodox Christians, Catholics, and Muslims alike—come to receive healing and spiritual consolation.
