Wooden Icon of Jesus Christ "Lamb of God"
Lamb is a symbolic name given to Jesus Christ, who sacrificed Himself for the salvation of man (John 1:29). The prototype of this sacrifice was all types of Old Testament sacrifices, the cult of which has appeared since time immemorial. The sons of the first people, Abel and Cain, already make sacrifices (Genesis 4.3-4), although the beginning of sacrifices was apparently laid by Adam and Eve. The need for a sacrificial cult was caused by the desire of man, damaged by sin, to return to God and restore the broken divine-human unity. The separation between him and God was so significant that man himself could not overcome it; he needed a mediator, and in this case the sacrificial cult acted as one. However, the latter did not possess any magical power, “for it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins” (Heb. 10.4). The effectiveness of the Old Testament sacrifices was due to the fact that they all symbolized the future. The sacrifice of “the mediator of the new covenant” (Heb. 9.15), who “not with the blood of goats and bulls, but with His own blood, once entered into the sanctuary and obtained eternal redemption” (Heb. 9.12), having destroyed sin “by His sacrifice” ( Hebrews 9:26).
