Icon “Creation of the World, Trinity, Angels, and Chosen Saints” – Orthodox Masterpiece
This stunning Orthodox icon, “Creation of the World, Trinity, Angels, and Chosen Saints,” is based on a 19th-century original preserved in a private collection. The icon presents a vivid and detailed theological vision, combining scenes from the Book of Genesis, depictions of the Holy Trinity, and a gathering of revered saints.
At the top, God the Father and the Holy Spirit are depicted overseeing creation. The left side illustrates the key moments from the Book of Genesis, portraying the divine act of bringing the world into existence. On the right, a rich assembly of saints, prophets, and apostles—including St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, St. George, St. Vladimir, and the holy martyrs Flor, Laurus, and John the Baptist—symbolize the spiritual legacy of Christianity.
The right side is dedicated to the saints: Florus, Laurus, Gurias, Samon and Aviv, the Beheaded Head of John the Baptist, the Great Martyrs: Nikita, Anisia, George, Dmitry; Saints Theodosius, Basil, Anthony, Joasaph, Vladimir, Gleb, Michael, Boris, Queen Helena, Gregory, Blaise, John, James, Nicholas the Wonderworker; Apostles: Thomas, Peter, Paul, Andrew, Philip; Prophets: Samuel, David, Moses, Obadiah, Solomon.
At the bottom, the dramatic “Miracle of Archangel Michael” is depicted, a well-known event in Christian tradition where Michael intervenes to save a church from destruction.
History of the Icon:
This icon follows the classic Orthodox tradition of visually narrating salvation history. The “Creation of the World” theme was a rare but deeply theological subject in Orthodox iconography, emphasizing divine order and the unity of creation with the heavenly realm. The inclusion of saints, apostles, and angels reflects their role as intercessors between humanity and God.
The Miracle of Archangel Michael, often linked to the legend of Chonae (where Michael saved a sanctuary from destruction), reinforces the icon’s theme of divine protection. This composition, with its rich colors, detailed miniatures, and intricate symbolism, showcases the mastery of 19th-century icon painters, serving as both a devotional object and a theological statement.
The icon is made by printing on a wooden board (mdf). Paints are mineral, do not fade with time. The thickness of the board is 1,6 cm. The board is covered with primer. The image is covered with wax. Each icon has a metal mount on the back side so that you can hang the icon on the wall.
