Holy Martyr Nazarius of Milanese, Roman. Wooden orthodox icon.

The Holy Martyrs Nazarius, Gervasius, Protasius and Celsus suffered during the reign of Emperor Nero (54-68). Saint Nazarius (the son of the Christian Perpetua and the Jew Africanus) was born in Rome and was baptized by Bishop Linus. From a young age, Saint Nazarius decided to dedicate his life to preaching the teachings of Christ and helping persecuted Christians. With this goal in mind, he left Rome and arrived in Milan. While visiting Christians in the Mediolanum prison, Nazarius met the twins Protasius and Gervasius there. The twin brothers were born in the city of Mediolanum (Milan) to a family of wealthy Roman citizens, Vitalius and Valeria. Left orphans (their parents were tortured for their Christian faith), the brothers distributed their property to the poor, freed their slaves and lived a life of fasting and prayer. For their confession of Christ, the pagans imprisoned them. Saint Nazarius loved the twins and did his best to ease their suffering. For this, the pagans beat him and sent him out of Milan. Saint Nazarius went to Gaul and there he successfully preached Christianity and converted many pagans.

In the city of Kimel, he baptized the son of a Christian woman named Celsius and, having raised him, acquired a faithful disciple and companion in missionary work. For preaching Christianity, the pagans gave them over to be torn apart by wild animals, but the animals did not touch the saints. Then they tried to drown the martyrs in the sea, but they walked on the water as if on dry land. The soldiers who carried out the execution were so amazed that they themselves accepted Christianity and released the holy martyrs.

The freed Nazarius and Celsius went to Milan and visited the martyrs Gervasius and Protasius in prison. Nero was informed about this. He ordered the beheading of Saints Nazarius and Celsius. Soon after, the brothers and Saints Gervasius and Protasius were executed.
