Holy Great Martyr Marina (Margaret) of Antioch. Wooden orthodox icon.

The Holy Great Martyr Marina was born in Asia Minor, in the city of Antioch, into the family of a pagan priest. In infancy she lost her mother, and her father gave her into the care of a wet nurse, who raised Marina in the Orthodox faith. Upon learning that his daughter had become a Christian, the father indignantly disowned her. During the persecution of Christians by Emperor Diocletian (284-305), Saint Marina was captured at the age of fifteen and thrown into prison. With firm trust in the will of God and His help, the young prisoner prepared for her upcoming exploit. The governor Olymbrios, enchanted by the girl’s beauty, tried to persuade her to renounce the Christian faith and become his wife. But the saint, without hesitation, rejected the flattering offers. Then the enraged ruler subjected the holy martyr to torture. Cruelly beaten, the saint was nailed to a board and her body was torn with tridents. The ruler himself, unable to bear the horror of this torture, covered his face with his hands. But the holy martyr remained steadfast. Thrown into prison for the night, she was granted a visitation from Heaven and was healed of her wounds. Tied to a tree, the martyr was scorched with fire. Barely alive, the saint prayed: "Lord, You have granted me to go through fire for Your Name, grant me to go through the water of holy Baptism." Hearing the word "water," the ruler ordered the saint to be drowned in a huge barrel. The martyr asked the Lord that this execution would become holy Baptism for her. When she was immersed in the water, a light suddenly shone and a snow-white dove descended from Heaven, carrying a golden crown in its beak. The bonds placed on Saint Marina came undone by themselves. The martyr stood in the baptismal font glorifying the Holy Trinity - the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Saint Marina emerged from the baptismal font completely healthy, without a single trace of burns. The people, struck by the miracle, began to glorify the True God, and many believed. This enraged the ruler, and he ordered the destruction of all who confessed the Name of Christ. Then 15,000 Christians perished, and the holy martyr Marina was beheaded.

The relics of the great martyr Marina were in the monastery in Antioch until 908 and from there they were transferred to Italy. Her honest hand was transferred to Athos, to the Vatopedi Monastery.

Monastics especially pray to Saint Marina, so that through the prayers of the saint they can overcome the devil's temptations.
