During the fierce persecutions under Emperor Diocletian, Saint Marina of Antioch was arrested at only fifteen years of age. Refusing to renounce Christ or accept marriage to the pagan governor Olymbrios, she endured brutal tortures with extraordinary spiritual fortitude. Through prayer, she was miraculously healed in prison and openly glorified the Holy Trinity. Her martyrdom became a powerful testimony that inspired thousands to believe in Christ, even at the cost of their own lives.

A distinctive and deeply symbolic element of Saint Marina’s life is her victory over the devil while imprisoned. When a demonic serpent appeared, the saint overcame it through the sign of the Cross and the power of prayer, physically subduing the enemy of salvation. For this reason, Saint Marina (Margaret) of Antioch is especially venerated as a helper against demonic temptations, spiritual attacks, fear, and inner struggles. Monastics and lay believers alike turn to her for strength, purity, and steadfast faith.

The relics of the Great Martyr Marina were preserved in Antioch until the 10th century and later transferred to Italy, while her holy hand is kept on Mount Athos at Vatopedi Monastery.
