Epiphany Baptism of Lord Jesus Christ. Wooden orthodox icon
Epiphany Baptism of Lord Jesus Christ. Wooden orthodox icon
Icon of the Epiphany (Baptism of the Lord Jesus Christ)
In the center of the composition is Jesus Christ standing in the waters of the Jordan. The Holy Spirit descends from heaven on the Savior in the form of a dove. On the bank on the left is John the Baptist, and on the right are four angels with covered hands.
Thus, in the baptism by John in the Jordan, Jesus identifies Himself with sinners as the “Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world” (Jn 1.29), the “Beloved” of the Father whose messianic task it is to redeem men from their sins (Lk 3.21, Mk 1.35). And he is revealed as well as One of the Divine Trinity, testified to by the voice of the Father, and by the Spirit in the form of a dove.
According to the Gospel, at the moment of the Savior’s baptism, the heavens opened and the Holy Spirit descended on Him in the form of a dove, and the voice of God the Father testified about the Son: “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” The Feast of Epiphany is also called Epiphany, since at the baptism of Jesus Christ the appearance of all three persons of the Holy Trinity occurred.
