Icon "Christ Pantocrator" — the Deesis Mosaic of Hagia Sophia

This image reproduces the face of Christ from one of the most celebrated works of Byzantine art ever created: the great Deesis mosaic on the south gallery wall of Hagia Sophia in Constantinople (present-day Istanbul). Dating to the thirteenth century, the monumental mosaic depicts Christ Pantocrator. The mosaic is believed to have been commissioned by Emperor Michael VIII Palaiologos shortly after he reclaimed Constantinople in 1261, restoring Orthodox worship to the great cathedral after decades of Latin occupation during the Crusades — making the mosaic not only a masterwork of sacred art, but a powerful declaration of the Byzantine Empire's spiritual and political renewal.

Christ is shown at the center of the composition, identified by the Greek inscription "IC XC," an abbreviation for "Jesus Christ." His face combines the two natures the Church has always confessed in Him — divine authority and human compassion held together in a single, unforgettable gaze. He appears with the traditional features of the Pantocrator type: a bearded face signifying maturity and the office of judge, a direct outward gaze meeting the viewer's own, His right hand raised in blessing, and His left hand grasping the closed Book of the Gospels, while His blue and gold robes signify His dual nature, fully divine and fully human.

This mosaic forms part of a larger composition known as the Deesis (from the Greek for "supplication" or "entreaty"), in which Christ is shown enthroned in heaven, flanked by the Virgin Mary and John the Baptist, who intercede on behalf of humanity. The Virgin and John the Baptist were understood as ideal intercessors precisely because of their intimate closeness to Christ — she as His mother, he as His kinsman and forerunner — appealing to Him for mercy on behalf of all who come before this image in prayer.

Surviving the turbulent centuries that followed — including the mosaic's long concealment beneath plaster during the building's centuries as a mosque — the face of Christ from the Deësis has endured as one of the most moving and recognizable images of the Savior in the entire history of Christian art, its gaze still described by visitors today as one that seems to look directly into the soul of all who stand before it.
