icon of the Archangel Michael – The Dreaded Commander of the Heavenly Hosts

This icon depicts Archangel Michael as the Supreme Commander of the Heavenly Hosts, a mighty warrior who defends God’s law and defeats the enemies of Christ. Originally created around 1719, this sacred image comes from the Znamensky Monastery in Irkutsk and is now housed in the Irkutsk Regional Art Museum named after V. P. Sukachev.

The name “Michael” means “Who is like God?” He is one of the most venerated Archangels in Christianity, leading the celestial army of Angels and Archangels. Mounted on a red horse, Archangel Michael is portrayed in full battle armor, holding the Gospel in one hand and a spear-cross in the other, with which he casts Satan into the abyss. A rainbow stretches between his hands—a divine symbol of foresight granted to him by God. In the upper section of the icon, Christ Emmanuel is depicted before the heavenly throne, blessing the Archangel’s mission.

As the protector of all Orthodox Christians, Archangel Michael is called upon for help in times of distress, illness, and spiritual warfare. He is also revered as the patron of warriors, builders, and the faithful, safeguarding homes from disasters and evil forces. The Orthodox Church honors him as the defender of faith, the guardian against heresy, and a key figure in the divine struggle against darkness.

The inscription at the bottom left of the icon reads:
“The enemy’s weapons have perished, and cities have been destroyed; their memory has vanished with noise.”
Dated August 13, 1719.

The icon is made by printing on a wooden board (mdf). Paints are mineral, do not fade with time. The thickness of the board is 1,6 cm. The board is covered with primer. The image is covered with wax. Each icon has a metal mount on the back side so that you can hang the icon on the wall.

Our icons are made by Orthodox craftsmen.

We hope it will be a good gift for you and your loved ones.
