Icon of Archangel Michael Christian Icon of the Holy Archistrategos, Supreme Commander of the Heavenly Hosts, Protector Against Evil & Spiritual Warfare

Behold the majestic image of the Holy Archangel Michael — the most celebrated and powerful of all the angels, known throughout Christianity, Judaism, and Islam as the Supreme Commander of the Heavenly Hosts, the Warrior of God, and the unwavering Defender of the Faith. His name in Latin, Quis ut Deus, means "Who is like God?" — a rhetorical battle cry against the pride of Satan, and a timeless reminder that our strength lies not in ourselves, but in God alone.

Unlike saints who lived earthly lives, St. Michael is an angelic being — pure spirit, created by God to serve and worship Him. His mission is to protect, defend, and guide, making him a powerful intercessor for the faithful.

Who Is Archangel Michael in Holy Scripture?

The Holy Archangel Michael is called the Archistrategos — the Chief Commander of all the bodiless powers. According to Holy Scripture and Tradition, he has interceded for humanity multiple times and continues to serve as the Defender of the Faith.

Michael is mentioned explicitly in Revelation 12:7–12, where he does battle with Satan, and in the Epistle of Jude, where the archangel and the devil dispute over the body of Moses. In the Book of Daniel, he is revealed as the great heavenly prince who stands guard over God's people in times of tribulation. In Revelation 12, he leads the charge against the devil and his angels, casting them out of heaven.

In Roman Catholic teachings, Saint Michael has four main roles: he is the leader of the Army of God and celestial forces against the powers of Hell; the angel of death who carries the souls of Christians to Heaven; the one who weighs souls on perfectly balanced scales; and the special Guardian of the Church.

Famous Apparitions of Archangel Michael

The Archangel has appeared miraculously throughout Christian history, leaving behind some of the world's most sacred pilgrimage sites:

  • Around 490 AD, St. Michael appeared to a bishop near Mount Gargano in Italy, designating a cave as a sacred place of prayer and promising his protection. This became the famous Sanctuary of Monte Sant'Angelo, one of the oldest and most important pilgrimage sites dedicated to St. Michael.
  • During a devastating plague in Rome in 590 AD, Pope St. Gregory the Great led a procession through the city. As they reached Hadrian's Mausoleum, St. Michael appeared atop the structure, sheathing his sword as a sign that the plague was ending. The mausoleum was renamed Castel Sant'Angelo (Castle of the Holy Angel) in his honor.
  • According to Norman legend, Michael appeared to St. Aubert, Bishop of Avranches, in 708, giving instruction to build a church on the rocky islet now known as Mont Saint-Michel — which remains a major pilgrimage site to this day.

What Do Christians Pray to Archangel Michael For?

Archangel Michael is one of the most universally invoked heavenly protectors in all of Christendom. Believers turn to him for:

  • ⚔️ Spiritual warfare and protection from evil — he is the supreme defender against demonic attack, temptation, and the forces of darkness
  • 🛡️ Protection of soldiers, police, and military personnel — in late medieval Christianity, Michael became the patron saint of chivalry and is now also considered the patron saint of police officers, paramedics, and the military
  • ⚖️ Justice and divine judgment — he holds the scales of God's justice and intercedes for righteousness
  • 💀 A holy and peaceful death — he accompanies souls to Heaven at the hour of death
  • 🏥 Healing — the spring which came forth after his miraculous intervention at Chonae (Colossae) is said to have special healing powers, and Michael has been associated with healing in many historical accounts
  • 🌍 Protection of nations and cities — St. Michael is most often invoked for protection from invasion by enemies and from civil war, and for the defeat of adversaries on the field of battle
  • 🙏 Daily protection of all the faithful — St. Bernard of Clairvaux recommended: "Whenever any grievous temptation or vehement sorrow oppresses thee, invoke thy guardian, thy leader, cry out to him and say: 'Lord, save us, lest we perish!'"
  • ✝️ Protection of the Church — popes throughout history have called upon St. Michael as the special protector of the Church in times of crisis

Feast Days

Archangel Michael is celebrated on multiple dates across Christian traditions:

  • 🗓️ September 29Michaelmas, the principal feast in the Roman Catholic and Anglican Church, known as the Feast of Saints Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael. Saint Michael's feast day of September 29 has been solemnly celebrated in many locations since the fifth century.
  • 🗓️ November 8 — the principal feast day in the Eastern Orthodox Church, honoring him along with all the Bodiless Powers of Heaven as their Supreme Commander (Synaxis of the Archangel Michael and the Other Bodiless Powers)
  • 🗓️ September 6 — commemorates the Miracle at Chonae (Colossae), when Michael miraculously protected a sacred spring and church
  • 🗓️ May 8 — commemorates the Apparition of St. Michael on Mount Gargano
