Arapetskaya Mother of God Icon — O All-Hymned Mother (Arabian Theotokos)
The Arapetskaya Icon of the Mother of God, also known as the Arabian Mother of God, Arabskaya Theotokos, or “O All-Hymned Mother” (O Vsepetaya Mati), is an exceptionally rare Orthodox iconographic image of the Virgin Mary and the Christ Child.
Distinguished by its dark, cloud-patterned mantle, Church Slavonic inscriptions and unusual depiction of the Christ Child, this icon belongs to a fascinating tradition of Marian imagery preserved in Russian iconography from at least the seventeenth century.
Unlike more familiar icons of the Mother of God, the Arapetskaya image incorporates passages from the Great Akathist Hymn to the Most Holy Theotokos directly into the garments of the Virgin Mary, uniting sacred image, prayer and hymnography.
Iconography — The Mother of God and the Christ Child
In this rare composition, the Most Holy Theotokos is depicted from the waist upward, her head gently inclined toward the Christ Child.
The Virgin Mary wears a dark, richly patterned maphorion (mantle) decorated with small silver-white clouds. This unusual celestial ornamentation evokes the heavenly realm and gives the icon its distinctive appearance.
The Christ Child is positioned on the viewer's right, an uncommon arrangement in this particular iconographic tradition. He is shown with a golden halo, wearing a reddish garment, and extending His arms toward His Mother.
The Virgin supports Him gently with both hands, emphasizing the intimate relationship between the Mother of God and the Incarnate Christ.
The icon's restrained brown and ochre background, golden halos and delicate Church Slavonic lettering create a solemn, contemplative image.
The Church Slavonic Inscriptions — “O All-Hymned Mother”
One of the most remarkable features of the Arapetskaya icon is the writing along the borders of the Virgin Mary's mantle.
The inscriptions are associated with the Great Akathist Hymn to the Mother of God, one of the most beloved hymns in Orthodox Christian worship.
The name “O Vsepetaya Mati” (О Всепетая Мати) means “O All-Hymned Mother” or “O Mother Worthy of All Praise.”
It refers to the concluding invocation of the Akathist:
O All-Hymned Mother, who gave birth to the Word, holiest of all the holy, accept our present offering and deliver from every calamity those who cry to you: Alleluia.
Other inscriptions are associated with the opening words of the Akathist, traditionally translated as:
To you, the Champion Leader, we your servants dedicate a feast of victory and thanksgiving...
These sacred texts transform the mantle into a visual expression of prayer, presenting the Mother of God as the one praised in the Church's ancient hymnography.
The History of the Arapetskaya (Arabian) Icon
The precise origin of the Arapetskaya or Arabian Icon of the Mother of God remains unknown.
Later devotional traditions have proposed different dates for its appearance. Some associate it with the early fourth century, around AD 301, while others connect it with the apostolic age and the missionary journeys of Saint Thomas the Apostle.
However, these accounts are traditional interpretations rather than historically established facts.
The iconographic type can be traced more securely through seventeenth-century Russian icon-painting sources, including the Siysky Illustrated Iconographic Manual (Siysky Podlinnik).
The name Arapetskaya appears in this tradition, while the alternative designation Arabian or Arabskaya became associated with the image in later iconographic practice.
The origins of these geographical names are uncertain. They should not be taken as proof that the icon was painted or discovered in Arabia.
A Rare Variant Preserved in Russian Iconography
This composition is especially notable for the unusual placement of the Christ Child, the absence of a royal crown on the Virgin Mary and the distinctive cloud-patterned mantle.
A rare historical variant associated with the collection of the State Tretyakov Gallery also features these characteristics.
The clouds on the maphorion distinguish the Arapetskaya image from conventional Marian iconography, while the Church Slavonic texts connect it directly with the theology and poetry of the Akathist.
The result is a sacred image that invites contemplation of the Incarnation of Christ, the heavenly dignity of the Theotokos and her intercession for the faithful.
Feast Day and Orthodox Veneration
The Arapetskaya (Arabian) Icon of the Mother of God is traditionally commemorated on September 19 in the Orthodox calendar.
Its title, “O All-Hymned Mother,” reflects the prayerful language of the Akathist and the Church's devotion to the Most Holy Theotokos.
The icon is particularly meaningful for those interested in rare Marian iconography, historical Russian icons, Church Slavonic sacred texts and the spiritual heritage of Orthodox hymnography.
