Three temptations were laid before Him: the temptation of hunger, the temptation of worldly power, and the temptation of doubt — doubt that the salvation of the world was truly possible, truly worth the cost that lay ahead. Christian theology has always understood these temptations as directed not at Christ's divine nature, which could not be shaken, but at His human nature — the nature He had taken on precisely in order to share our vulnerability, our exhaustion, our uncertainty.

Kramskoi himself was remarkably candid about his intention. "This is not Christ," he wrote — "it is the representation of that sorrow which is familiar to all of us. I wanted to paint a man deep in thought." And yet, precisely because he painted that universal sorrow so truthfully, the figure became unmistakably Christ — the One who took all human anguish into Himself and refused to put it down.
