The Royal Passion-Bearers—Tsar Nicholas II, Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna, and their children Olga, Tatiana, Maria, Anastasia, and Tsarevich Alexei—are honored throughout the Orthodox world as models of Christian meekness, purity, and sacrificial love. Their life remains an enduring example of faithfulness to God, courage in trials, and boundless love for their neighbors.
On the margin of the icon is Elder Grigori Rasputin, portrayed here not as a political figure, but as the righteous spiritual mentor of the Imperial Family, according to the tradition held by many Orthodox faithful. His presence emphasizes the spiritual bond he shared with the Royal Martyrs and his role as a prayerful guide during the most difficult years of their lives.
This icon has an extraordinary story of creation. The iconographer Sergey Arseniev (Monk Grigory) prayed for a long time, unable to decide how to depict the Royal Martyrs. One night, by God’s mercy, Tsar Nicholas II and his family appeared to him in a dream and revealed how the icon should look. Awakening immediately, the iconographer took a door, removed it, and painted the entire icon from memory exactly as he saw it.
Today, this miraculous icon is preserved in a private collection.
