Saint Venerable Paisius the Great. Wooden orthodox icon.

Saint Paisius the Great was born in Egypt in the middle of the 4th century. Even in childhood, having lost his father, he was dedicated to God by his mother and in his youth, serving as a church cleric, he showed himself to be a pious and zealous performer of his duties.

In adulthood, he accepted monasticism in an Egyptian skete, where he labored for a long time, instructed by Saint Pambo (4th century; commemorated on July 18/31). Under his experienced guidance, Saint Paisius went through a severe school of asceticism, lived in complete solitude, not seeing a human face for three years, studied the Holy Scriptures, fasted, prayed and succeeded in every virtue. After the death of his teacher, Saint Paisius, already strengthened in his exploits, withdrew into the depths of the desert, where he carved out a cave for himself, and there in silence he served the Lord.

The great ascetic labors of the Venerable Paisius began to attract numerous followers to him from among monks and laymen, and a monastic Lavra arose around the cave, the inhabitants of which lived under his leadership. The Venerable Paisius considered the main monastic virtue to be the unconditional submission of personal will to the paternal will of elders experienced in asceticism, who taught and guided the novice monks in difficult ascetic exercises. The Venerable Paisius taught some of those who loved the monastic life to spend time in prayer and reading the Holy Scriptures, others he forced to sing together and kindle in themselves brotherly love and unanimity, others he ordered to engage in crafts, so that together with physical labor they would also practice virtue, earning food not only for themselves, but also for the poor. When the monastic community was completely well-organized, the Venerable Paisius, striving for solitude, withdrew to the desert, glorified by the exploits of St. Ammon (4th century; commemorated on October 4/17).

But here too, great exploits and many miracles gathered around the cell of the Venerable Paisius zealots of piety, and a new Lavra arose, which was led by one of his disciples according to his rule.

For his great exploits, the Venerable Paisius was granted by the Lord the contemplation of heavenly mysteries. He died in extreme old age, his relics, glorified by miracles, were later transferred to Pisidia (in Asia Minor).
