This Orthodox icon depicts Saint Venerable John of the Kiev Caves, the Much-Suffering, one of the great ascetics of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, whose life became a profound testimony of spiritual struggle and victory over sinful passions. The original icon dates to the 19th century and follows the traditional monastic iconographic canon.

Saint John devoted his life to intense repentance, prayer, and ascetic labor. For nearly thirty years he lived in seclusion, fasting strictly, keeping night vigils, and wearing heavy chains, seeking to overcome bodily temptations. When the inner struggle did not cease, the saint undertook an even greater feat: during Great Lent he buried himself up to the chest in a cave near the relics of Saint Anthony of the Caves, offering his entire being to God.

The enemy sought to terrify him with visions of a fiery serpent, yet through unwavering faith and divine help, Saint John attained complete freedom from tormenting passions on the night of Holy Pascha. From that moment, God granted him a special grace—to help others suffering from similar temptations through his prayers.
