Saint Macarius of Unzha and Yellow Waters Venerable. Wooden orthodox icon.

Reverend Maximus the Greek is a highly educated intellectual of the Renaissance, who traveled to many cultural centers of Europe in search of truth, went through the school of Catholic monasticism and Orthodox asceticism, and eventually became a Russian saint.

One of the researchers of his life likened it to a triptych, the central part of which, the connecting rod, is Athos, and the side panels are Italy and Russia.

Saint Maximus left behind about 365 texts - theological, apologetic, spiritual and moral, treatises on grammar and language structure, letters to individuals. In them, he denounced the Latins and Protestants; condemned the passion for astrology, denounced the growing ritualism in Rus' without a genuine life in Christ, and even attacked the temporary boyars under the young Ivan IV, for whom he left "Instructive Chapters for the Orthodox Rulers."

He also left behind a canon to the Holy Spirit, written in charcoal on the wall of a cramped, damp prison cell of the Joseph-Volokolamsk Monastery. Today, it is heard in many of our churches.

And the saint began each day of his imprisonment with the words of a sermon composed to console himself: “Do not grieve, do not mourn, and do not be sad, dear soul, about the fact that you suffer without truth…”

Since the 16th century, the works of Maximus the Greek began to diverge in numerous copies. And although he was canonized only in the year of the 1000th anniversary of the Baptism of Rus, he has been revered since ancient times as one of the Radonezh saints. As early as the middle of the 17th century, “The Tale of Maximus the Greek” as the life of the saint was included in the Menaion, and icons with his image appeared. And in 1591, his relics were discovered - they turned out to be incorruptible, even part of the mantle was preserved.

In 1996, after archaeological excavations, the relics of the saint were rediscovered, and since then they have been in the Holy Spirit Church of the Lavra.

Above his tomb on a copper plaque is carved:

"And what he divinely wrote in books,

He showed with his life and deeds."

The icon is made by printing on a wooden board. Paints are mineral, do not fade with time. The thickness of the board is 2 cm. The board is covered with primer by hand. The image is covered with wax. Each icon has a metal mount on the back side so that you can hang the icon on the wall.

You can buy the icon in three sizes:

  • 13 х 10 centimeters (5,1 x 3,9 inches)
  • 19 х 15 centimeters (7,5 x 5,9 inches)
  • 26 х 20 centimeters (10,2 x 7,9 inches)

Our icons are made by Orthodox craftsmen. You can read more about the technology here.

We hope it will be a good gift for you and your loved ones.
