Saint Venerable Grand Princess Euphrosyne of Moscow, known in the world as Eudokia, is one of the most beloved female saints of medieval Rus’, revered as a model of Christian marriage, motherhood, humility, and monastic holiness.
She was born around 1353 into the noble family of the Prince of Suzdal and became the wife of Saint Grand Prince Dmitry Donskoy, the defender of Holy Rus’ and victor of the Battle of Kulikovo. As Grand Princess of Moscow, Eudokia shared in the heavy responsibility of governing the land during a time of wars, political trials, and spiritual renewal.
Saint Eudokia was known for her deep faith, mercy, and quiet strength. She supported her husband in prayer and counsel, raised their children in Christian virtue, and became a spiritual mother to the people of Moscow. After the death of Saint Dmitry Donskoy in 1389, she devoted herself even more fully to works of charity, caring for the poor, widows, and orphans, and generously supporting churches and monasteries.
In her later years, the Grand Princess chose the path of renunciation and was tonsured into monasticism with the name Euphrosyne, meaning “joy.” Even while remaining outwardly in the world for the sake of her children and the state, she lived inwardly as a nun—practicing fasting, prayer, humility, and obedience. Her life united royal dignity with evangelical meekness, showing that holiness is possible in every state of life.
Saint Euphrosyne was granted the gift of miracles, and through her prayers many received healing and help. She peacefully departed to the Lord in 1407, leaving behind a radiant example of sanctified womanhood. Her relics rest in the Ascension Convent of the Moscow Kremlin, where she has been venerated for centuries.
