This ancient icon of Saint John the Forerunner and Baptist of the Lord, created in the second half of the 16th century, bears witness to the deep reverence with which the Orthodox Church has always honored the greatest of the prophets — the one who prepared the way for Christ.

Saint John was born to the righteous priest Zechariah and Elizabeth in their old age, after years of childlessness. His birth was announced by the Archangel Gabriel as a sign of God’s mercy and as the beginning of the fulfillment of the ancient prophecies. Even before his birth, John leapt in his mother’s womb at the greeting of the Most Holy Theotokos, recognizing the presence of the Savior.

When King Herod ordered the massacre of the infants in Bethlehem, Elizabeth fled with the young John into the wilderness. His father Zechariah was murdered in the Temple for refusing to reveal his son’s whereabouts. Thus, from his earliest days, John’s life was marked by suffering for the sake of God’s truth.

The Holy Forerunner grew up in the desert, living a life of strict fasting, prayer, and contemplation. Clothed in camel’s hair and sustained by locusts and wild honey, he became the voice foretold by the Prophet Isaiah:
"The voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord."

At about thirty years of age, John began preaching on the banks of the Jordan River, calling people to repentance and baptizing those who confessed their sins. He prepared hearts to receive the Messiah. When the Lord Jesus Christ came to him, John humbly baptized the very One whose sandals he felt unworthy to untie. At that moment, the Holy Trinity was revealed — the Son in the Jordan, the Spirit descending like a dove, and the Father’s voice from heaven.

John continued to preach boldly, fearlessly denouncing sin — even when it meant confronting King Herod for his unlawful union with Herodias. For this truth, he was imprisoned. During Herod’s feast, at the request of Herodias through her daughter Salome, John was beheaded. Thus he sealed his witness with martyrdom.

The Church calls him Forerunner not only because he preceded Christ in birth and preaching, but also because he descended before Him into Hades, announcing the coming of the Savior even to those in darkness.
