This remarkable 16th-century icon depicts Saint John Chrysostom, one of the greatest Fathers and Teachers of the Orthodox Church, Archbishop of Constantinople, brilliant theologian, and author of the Divine Liturgy most commonly celebrated in the Orthodox Church to this day.
The original icon is preserved in the Pskov State Museum-Reserve and represents an important example of Russian iconography of the 16th century, reflecting the spiritual depth and artistic refinement characteristic of the Pskov school.
Saint John received the name Chrysostom, meaning “Golden-Mouthed,” because of the extraordinary power, clarity, and beauty of his preaching. His sermons were filled with profound theological insight, pastoral love, and fearless moral clarity. He boldly rebuked corruption, injustice, and moral decay — even among rulers and members of the imperial court. For his uncompromising faithfulness to the Gospel, he endured exile and suffering, eventually reposing in 407 AD.
