Icon of Saint Right-Believing Prince Igor of Chernigov
This icon depicts Saint Igor of Chernigov (in monasticism Ignatius, in schema George) — a holy prince who followed the path of meekness, renunciation, and martyrdom. His Christian feat closely resembles that of the first canonized saints of Rus’, Boris and Gleb: like them, he refused to shed blood in dynastic conflict, entrusted himself to God, and accepted death without resistance.
For believers beyond the Slavic world, Saint Igor stands as a powerful witness that political power is fleeting, but faithfulness to Christ is eternal.
A Prince in a Time of Turmoil
Prince Igor was a great-grandson of Yaroslav the Wise and the son of Oleg Sviatoslavich, ruler of Chernigov and Novgorod-Seversky. He lived during a time of fierce dynastic struggles among the descendants of Yaroslav, when princes often fought one another for the throne of Kiev.
Although Igor at times participated in these conflicts, he took no joy in fraternal strife. When opportunities for reconciliation arose, he gladly pursued peace rather than ambition.
In 1145, his elder brother Vsevolod, Grand Prince of Kiev, appointed Igor as his successor. This decision angered another branch of the ruling family — the descendants of Vladimir Monomakh. The people of Kiev initially swore allegiance to Igor after he promised to restore justice and end abuses committed under the previous rule.
However, his principled stance soon disappointed the citizens. When he forbade them from plundering the estates of former rivals, many turned against him. Secretly, they invited Prince Iziaslav of Pereyaslavl to take the throne.
Igor marched out with his retinue, but the people betrayed him and defected to Iziaslav. After hiding for several days in the swamps, he was captured and imprisoned in a wooden dungeon — a cold log structure without doors or windows, from which release was possible only by breaking through with an axe.
His reign had lasted less than two weeks.
Renunciation of Power
Igor’s relatives attempted to secure his release, but he no longer desired the throne. Instead, he asked only to be allowed to take monastic vows and dedicate the rest of his life to prayer.
After imprisonment, he fell gravely ill, unable to eat, drink, or move. No longer a political threat, he was transferred under guard to the Monastery of Saint Theodore in Kiev. There he was tonsured a monk with the name Ignatius, and later received the great schema with the name George.
His choice was radical: he renounced earthly power and embraced humility. In this, he followed the Gospel path — preferring suffering with Christ to rule without Him.
Martyrdom
Peace did not come.
In September 1147, while Prince Iziaslav was away on campaign, a messenger arrived in Kiev claiming that Igor’s relatives were preparing an uprising. To prevent unrest, the crowd was incited to eliminate the former prince.
A mob burst into the church where the Divine Liturgy had just ended. They dragged Igor from the sanctuary, tore off his monastic garments, and beat him mercilessly. Despite attempts to defend him, he was brutally killed and his half-lifeless body dragged through the streets.
According to the Chernigov Chronicle, when his body was brought into the church, all the candles lit themselves miraculously — a sign of divine approval and sanctification.
Like Boris and Gleb before him, Igor did not resist his killers. He chose not to return violence for violence. His meek endurance crowned him as a passion-bearer — one who suffers death in a Christ-like spirit.
Veneration and Legacy
Local veneration of the prince-monk began almost immediately after his death. By 1150, at the request of his brother Sviatoslav, a written Life was composed, modeled after the Lives of Saints Boris and Gleb. By the 15th century, he was recognized among the saints of all Rus’.
He is remembered as:
- A ruler who preferred righteousness to popularity
- A prince who renounced power for prayer
- A monk who endured violence without resistance
- A martyr whose weakness became spiritual victory
