The Holy Martyr John the Warrior served in the imperial army of Julian the Apostate (361–363). Along with other soldiers, he was sent to persecute and kill Christians. While outwardly appearing to be a persecutor, Saint John in fact provided great assistance to persecuted Christians: he freed those who were captured, warned others of impending danger, and facilitated their escape. Saint John showed mercy not only to Christians but also to all those in need and in need of assistance: he visited the sick and consoled the grieving. When Julian the Apostate learned of the saint's actions, he imprisoned him. In 363, the emperor was killed in a war with the Persians. Saint John was released and dedicated his life to serving his neighbors, living in holiness and purity. He died at a ripe old age.

The exact year of his death is unknown, and the burial place of Saint John the Warrior was gradually forgotten. He appeared to a pious woman and revealed his resting place, which became known in the area. His uncovered relics were placed in the Church of the Apostle John the Theologian in Constantinople. The Lord granted the holy relics of John the Warrior the grace-filled power of healing. Through the prayers of Saint John, the oppressed and grieving receive consolation. 

The saint's feast day is August 12.
