🕊️ Saint Chrysostomos of Smyrna (1867–1922) – Defender of Faith, Martyr for His People

This powerful Orthodox icon honors Saint Chrysostomos (Kalafatis), the revered Metropolitan of Smyrna, who gave his life in 1922 during the Asia Minor Catastrophe. Known for his eloquence, courage, and tireless dedication to the Greek Orthodox faithful of Asia Minor, Saint Chrysostomos became a modern-day martyr, sacrificed at the hands of a violent mob after refusing to abandon his flock.

📖 His Life and Martyrdom:

Born in 1867 in Triglia, Bithynia, Chrysostomos was raised in a devout Orthodox family. He dedicated his life to the Church from an early age and studied theology on the island of Halki. A gifted orator and theologian, he quickly rose through the ecclesiastical ranks, becoming Metropolitan of Drama and later, in 1910, Metropolitan of Smyrna.

As bishop, he revitalized church life, supported education, built hospitals and schools, and defended the Orthodox faithful during times of political upheaval. During the Greco-Turkish War (1919–1922), Saint Chrysostomos refused to abandon his city when Turkish forces entered Smyrna in 1922.

Rather than flee, he chose to stay with his people, administering final prayers and sacraments in his church. His martyrdom came swiftly and brutally — tortured and handed over to a mob by Turkish authorities. His final words were prayers of forgiveness: “Lord, have mercy.”
