This beautiful icon depicts Saint Catherine the Great Martyr of Alexandria — one of the most venerated saints in the Christian world, renowned for her wisdom, purity, and unwavering faith in Christ.
Saint Catherine was born in Alexandria into a noble family and was distinguished by rare beauty and learning. Rejecting earthly suitors, she came to know Christ as her Heavenly Bridegroom through a miraculous vision. The Most Holy Theotokos appeared to her in a dream with the Divine Child, Who placed a wedding ring on Catherine's finger, saying: "Know no earthly bridegroom." From that time, the saint dedicated herself entirely to Christ.
During the persecutions of Emperor Maximian, Catherine fearlessly confessed the Christian faith before the emperor and pagan philosophers. By the power of the Holy Spirit, she confounded fifty of the most learned philosophers, who themselves came to believe in Christ. Refusing to renounce her faith even under threat of terrible tortures, the saint accepted martyrdom in 304 AD.
Angels carried her holy relics to Mount Sinai, where they rest to this day in the monastery bearing her name.
