Saint Basil I, the Wonderworker of Ryazan, is mentioned in the Laurentian Chronicle and is listed fourth in the ancient list of Ryazan bishops. No evidence has survived regarding his origins—who he was born to, where he was born, and when. However, church hymns have preserved references to Saint Basil being a sanctified servant of the Lord from infancy, and to his perfection both morally and spiritually from his youth, conquering sinfulness within himself with the fear of God and implanting all that is holy in his soul and heart.
He began his first pious endeavors in Murom. There, he took the holy monastic vows, and when Divine Providence decreed that he be made the hierarch of the Murom-Ryazan flock, he already shone with great feats of abstinence, meekness, and humility. The Life of Saint Basil describes his election to the rank of bishop as follows: "After the city of Murom was desolated by infidels, the faithful Prince George Yaroslavich arrived in Murom from Kyiv. This prince restored the local Church of the Annunciation and the second church dedicated to the Holy Passion-Bearers Boris and Gleb, and established a bishop in their church, named Basil, a righteous and pious man."
Having assumed the high rank of bishop, Saint Basil, with all the zeal of a true pastor of the Church of Christ, began to labor in edifying his flock: he gathered those scattered by the barbarian invasion into a single flock, strengthened the weary with faith, consoled the contrite with firm hope in God's mercy, and restored the lost to the right path. In such high feats of virtue, Saint Basil showed himself to be a good, wise and tireless shepherd, merciful and loving, kind and humble, an unshakable pillar of purity and chastity – an example to his flock in prayers, forgiveness, and in the feats of the holy fathers.
