Icon of Saint Athanasius the Great, Archbishop of Alexandria
This icon depicts Saint Athanasius the Great, one of the most revered Fathers of the Orthodox Church, Archbishop of Alexandria, theologian, confessor, and unwavering defender of the true faith. He is honored as a Pillar of Orthodoxy and a champion of the doctrine of Christ’s full divinity.
Saint Athanasius is traditionally portrayed as a hierarch, wearing episcopal vestments, holding the Gospel or a scroll symbolizing his theological writings. His calm yet resolute expression reflects a life marked by ascetic discipline, intellectual brilliance, and fearless confession of the Truth.
Life of Saint Athanasius the Great
Saint Athanasius was born around 296 AD in Alexandria, Egypt, one of the most important centers of early Christianity and theological learning. From his youth, he displayed exceptional intellect and spiritual maturity. He received a classical Greek education and was deeply formed by the Christian tradition of Alexandria.
As a young deacon, Athanasius accompanied Saint Alexander of Alexandria to the First Ecumenical Council of Nicaea (325 AD), where he played a crucial role in opposing the Arian heresy, which denied the full divinity of Jesus Christ. Athanasius forcefully defended the confession that the Son of God is “of one essence (homoousios) with the Father.”
At the age of about 30, he succeeded Saint Alexander as Archbishop of Alexandria, a position he would hold for 45 years, though much of that time was spent in exile.
Defender of Orthodoxy
The life of Saint Athanasius was marked by relentless persecution, not from pagans, but from those within the Christian world who supported Arianism. Because of his unwavering defense of Orthodox doctrine, he was exiled five times, spending a total of 17 years in banishment.
Despite imperial pressure, slander, and threats to his life, Saint Athanasius never compromised the truth of the Gospel. His steadfast confession earned him the title “Athanasius contra mundum” — Athanasius against the world.
During his exiles, he found refuge among monks in the Egyptian desert, especially with Saint Anthony the Great, whose life he later wrote, producing one of the most influential hagiographical works in Christian history.
Theological Legacy
Saint Athanasius was a prolific and profound writer. His works laid the foundation for Orthodox Christology and Trinitarian theology. Among his most important writings are:
- “On the Incarnation of the Word”
- “Orations Against the Arians”
- “Life of Saint Anthony”
- Festal letters clarifying the canon of Scripture
In his Paschal Letter of 367 AD, Saint Athanasius listed the 27 books of the New Testament, providing the earliest complete canon identical to the one used by the Church today.
His theology emphasized that Christ became man so that humanity might become godlike by grace — a central teaching of Orthodox soteriology.
Repose and Veneration
Saint Athanasius reposed peacefully in 373 AD after witnessing the gradual triumph of Orthodoxy over Arianism. The Church honors him as a Great Confessor, Teacher of the Church, and Doctor of Orthodoxy.
