Icon of Saint Anastasius of Sinai, Venerable Abbot
Original icon: 19th century
Feast Day: April 20 (May 3, New Style)
This icon depicts Saint Anastasius of Sinai, a venerable monk, abbot, theologian, and one of the great defenders of Orthodox Christianity in the 7th century. The original icon dates to the 19th century and follows traditional Orthodox iconographic canons, portraying the saint as a monastic elder filled with spiritual authority, inner stillness, and ascetic dignity.
Saint Anastasius is shown as an abbot of the Monastery of Saint Catherine on Mount Sinai, a place of profound biblical and spiritual significance, where God revealed Himself to Moses. His image reflects a life entirely devoted to prayer, theological struggle, and pastoral care for the Church.
Life of Saint Anastasius of Sinai
Saint Anastasius was born around 640 AD on the island of Cyprus, in the city of Amathus. From a young age, he received an excellent classical education, which he later completed with deep theological study. Early in life, he embraced monasticism, renouncing worldly ambitions in favor of total dedication to Christ.
Leaving his homeland, he traveled to Jerusalem, then to Egypt, and finally settled on Mount Sinai, entering the monastery later known as the Monastery of Saint Catherine. At that time, the monastery was led by Saint John Climacus, the author of The Ladder of Divine Ascent, followed by his brother Saint George. After Saint George’s repose, Anastasius was appointed abbot, from which he received the name “of Sinai” (Sinaitus).
Defender of Orthodox Faith
The 7th century was marked by intense dogmatic controversies, and Saint Anastasius became one of the most active and courageous defenders of Orthodox doctrine. He undertook extensive missionary journeys throughout Egypt, Palestine, Arabia, and possibly Syria, preaching and teaching the true faith.
He strongly opposed:
- Monophysitism
- Monothelitism
- Severianism
- Theodosianism
- The sect of the Acephali
Remarkably, Saint Anastasius also addressed the emergence of Islam, leaving written guidance on how Christians should engage in dialogue with Muslims—an extraordinary testimony to his pastoral wisdom and theological clarity.
Ascetic Life and Repose
Saint Anastasius spent his long life in unceasing prayer, ascetic labor, and theological writing. He lived to witness the triumph of Orthodoxy over the Monothelite heresy, formally condemned at the Sixth Ecumenical Council (680–681).
The exact year of his repose is uncertain. Scholarly research places his death no earlier than 701 AD, possibly at the very beginning of the 8th century.
Writings and Legacy
Saint Anastasius left behind a rich body of theological and ascetical works, many of which are preserved in Volume 89 of Patrologia Graeca. His writings continue to be studied for their clarity, depth, and unwavering commitment to Orthodox teaching.
It is important not to confuse Saint Anastasius of Sinai with other saints bearing the same name, particularly Anastasius I of Sinai, Patriarch of Antioch, who was a different historical figure.
