Traditional Orthodox Iconography
Model of Humility and Renunciation
This Orthodox icon depicts Saint Alexius, Man of God — one of the most venerated saints whose life became a model of perfect humility, voluntary poverty, and sacrificial love for God.
Life of Saint Alexius
Saint Alexius was born in Rome to the noble senator Euphemian and his wife Aglaida. Raised in piety, he was married to a beautiful princess. But on his wedding night, the young Alexius gave his bride his gold ring and belt, saying: "Keep these, and may the Lord be between us" — and that same night he secretly left his father's house to dedicate himself entirely to God.
He traveled to Edessa in Syria, where the Holy Image Not-Made-by-Hands was kept, and lived seventeen years as a beggar at the gates of the church, sustained only by bread and water, devoting himself to prayer and fasting. When the Most Holy Theotokos revealed his holiness in a vision, he fled to avoid human glory.
A storm brought his ship back to Italy near Rome. Seeing God's Providence in this, Alexius went to his father's house and asked for shelter as a poor pilgrim. Unrecognized by his family, he lived another seventeen years in the entrance hall of his father's home, enduring servants' mockery, witnessing his parents' grief and his wife's faithfulness, yet keeping the secret of his spiritual struggle.
Before his death, Saint Alexius wrote his life story on a scroll. After he died, a heavenly voice proclaimed in Saint Peter's Basilica: "Seek the Man of God in Euphemian's house." When found, his body shone with unearthly light and he held the scroll tightly in his hand. His father, mother, and wife wept over his body. Miracles flowed from his relics: the mute spoke, the blind saw, the sick were healed. Saint Alexius reposed on March 17, 411 AD.
