Icon of Saint Alexius, Metropolitan of Moscow and All Rus

19th century original

This Orthodox icon depicts Saint Alexius, Metropolitan of Moscow and All Rus, a great hierarch, miracle worker, statesman, and spiritual father of medieval Rus’, whose life was devoted to strengthening the Church and guiding his people through times of political turmoil and spiritual trial.

The icon originates from the 19th century and follows the traditional canonical representation of the saint as a hierarch — clothed in episcopal vestments, with a calm, wise countenance reflecting spiritual authority, humility, and pastoral love.

Early Life and Divine Calling

Saint Alexius was born around 1292 (or 1304) in Moscow, into the noble family of Feodor Byakont, a boyar originally from the Chernigov principality. His baptismal name was Eleutherius.

From an early age, God revealed to him his high calling. At the age of twelve, while setting nets to catch birds, Eleutherius fell asleep and clearly heard a mysterious voice saying:
“Alexius! Why do you labor in vain? You shall become a fisher of men.”

From that moment, the boy withdrew into prayer, frequently attended church services, and at the age of fifteen resolved to dedicate his life to God.

Monastic Formation

In 1320, he entered the Epiphany Monastery in Moscow, where he spent more than twenty years in strict ascetic discipline. His spiritual mentors were the revered elders Gerontius and Stephen, the brother of Saint Sergius of Radonezh.

His deep humility, obedience, and wisdom soon became evident to all.

Service to the Church

By order of Metropolitan Theognostus, Saint Alexius was called from the monastery to serve the Church by overseeing ecclesiastical judicial affairs. For twelve years, he fulfilled this difficult obedience as the metropolitan’s vicar.

In 1350, Metropolitan Theognostus consecrated him as Bishop of Vladimir, and after the metropolitan’s repose, Patriarch Philotheus of Constantinople appointed Alexius as Metropolitan of Moscow and All Rus.

His official charter, dated June 30, 1354, states that although he was not Greek — which was highly unusual — he was elevated to the metropolitan see as an exception, due to his virtuous life and outstanding spiritual qualities.

Shepherd of Church and State

Saint Alexius became a true shepherd not only of the Church but also of the nation. Despite political unrest and rivalry among princes, he worked tirelessly to preserve unity and peace. He appointed bishops, organized cenobitic monasteries modeled after the Holy Trinity Monastery of Saint Sergius, and skillfully navigated relations with the rulers of the Golden Horde.

In 1357, the Khan summoned the saint to heal his wife Taydula, who had gone blind. Saint Alexius humbly replied:
“This request exceeds my strength, but I trust that God will not despise the prayer of faith.”
Through his prayer and holy water, Taydula was miraculously healed.

Spiritual Father of Saint Dmitry Donskoy

After the death of Grand Prince Ivan, Saint Alexius became the guardian and spiritual mentor of his young son Dmitry, later known as Saint Dmitry Donskoy. The metropolitan labored tirelessly to reconcile feuding princes and strengthen Moscow as the spiritual center of Rus’.

Founder of Monasteries

Saint Alexius founded and restored numerous monasteries, including:

  • Andronikov Monastery in Moscow (1361), dedicated to the Savior Not Made by Hands
  • Chudov Monastery within the Moscow Kremlin
  • The Annunciation Monastery in Nizhny Novgorod
  • The Constantine and Helen Monastery in Vladimir
  • The Alexeyevsky Convent for women (1361)

These monasteries became centers of prayer, learning, and spiritual life.

Repose and Glorification

Saint Alexius reposed peacefully on February 12, 1378, at the age of 78, having served as metropolitan for 24 years. According to his will, he was buried in the Chudov Monastery.

Fifty years later, his holy relics were miraculously uncovered, after which widespread veneration of the saint began. Countless healings and answers to prayer followed, confirming his role as a powerful intercessor for the Russian land and for all who seek God with humility.
