This Orthodox icon depicts Saint Alexander Nevsky, the holy right-believing Grand Prince of Russia, a great ruler, warrior, and model of wise Christian life. The image is based on an 1870 original icon from a private collection, reflecting the traditional Russian iconographic style of the 19th century.
Prince Alexander Yaroslavich (1220–1263) ruled as Prince of Novgorod and Kiev and later as Grand Prince of Vladimir. Gifted with exceptional military talent, he achieved historic victories at a young age—defeating foreign invaders at the Battle of the Neva (1240) at only twenty years old and at the Battle on the Ice (1242) at twenty-two. Throughout his life, Saint Alexander never lost a single battle, yet he became even more renowned for his wisdom as a statesman and diplomat.
Guided by deep Orthodox faith, Alexander Nevsky preserved the spiritual and political integrity of Rus’ during times of great danger. Through peaceful diplomacy, he protected the Church and even established an Orthodox diocese within the Golden Horde, ensuring the survival of Christian life under difficult conditions. Shortly before his repose, he received monastic tonsure with the name Alexius, sealing his life with humility and total dedication to Christ.
Saint Alexander Nevsky is canonized as a Right-Believing Prince—a title given to rulers who remained faithful to Christ while serving their people with righteousness and mercy. Before his icon, believers pray for:
