Icon of the Prophet Elijah in the Desert
Venerate the sacred image of the Holy Prophet Elijah (Hebrew: Eliyyahu; Greek: Elias; Latin: Elias), one of the greatest and most powerful prophets of the Old Testament, revered across Orthodox, Catholic, and all Christian traditions as a towering pillar of faith, prayer, and divine zeal. In iconography the Prophet Elijah is classically depicted ascending to Heaven in a fiery chariot, surrounded with flames, harnessed to four winged horses — an image that has captivated Christian hearts for centuries and serves as a powerful reminder of God's glory and the ultimate victory of faith.
Life of the Holy Prophet Elijah
Saint Epiphanius of Cyprus gives the following account of the birth of the Prophet Elijah: "When Elijah was born, his father Sobach saw in a vision angels of God around him. They swaddled him with fire and fed him with flames." The name Elijah — the Lord's strength — given to the infant, defined his whole life. From the years of his youth he dedicated himself to the One God, settled in the wilderness and spent his life in strict fasting, meditation, and prayer.
Elijah was a prophet and miracle worker who lived in the northern kingdom of Israel during the reign of King Ahab in the 9th century BC. He defended the worship of the Hebrew God Yahweh over that of the Canaanite deity Baal. King Ahab's wife Jezebel had introduced the worship of false gods throughout Israel, leading the people into spiritual ruin.
In his most famous act of faith, Elijah asked God to send fire from heaven to consume his sacrifice, which had been drenched in water. God answered his prayer, and the people of Israel were convinced of the power of the one true God. He then called down rain, ending three and a half years of devastating drought.
When the brook dried up, God sent Elijah to the widow of Zarephath, from whose scanty store he was supported for the space of two years. During this period the widow's son died, and was restored to life by Elijah.
After his trials, Elijah fled to Mount Horeb (Mount Sinai), and while hiding in a cave, God spoke to him through a soft whispering sound, giving him guidance and assuring the prophet that all would be well.
One day, as he was speaking with his successor Elisha, "a fiery chariot and fiery horses parted them both asunder, and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven" (2 Kings 2:11). Elijah later appeared alongside Moses at the Transfiguration of Jesus on Mount Tabor.
What Do Christians Pray to the Prophet Elijah For?
The Prophet Elijah is one of the most powerfully invoked intercessors in the Christian tradition. Believers turn to him for:
- 🌧️ Rain, drought relief, and favorable weather — we pray to him for deliverance from drought and to ask for seasonable weather
- 🔥 Fervent, powerful prayer — James 5:16–18 cites Elijah's prayers which started and ended the famine in Israel as examples of how the fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much
- 💪 Strength of faith in times of persecution — he is the model for all who stand alone against corruption and godlessness
- 😔 Consolation in depression and despair — he experienced profound loneliness in the desert, yet was comforted by God's still, small voice
- 🚗 Blessing of vehicles — Saint Elijah is the patron of the Carmelite Order and of vehicle blessings
- 🌿 Healing and miracles — he raised the dead and multiplied food; the faithful invoke him for miraculous intervention
- 🕊️ Spiritual zeal and conversion — those seeking a renewed fire in their faith pray to the "Zealot of God"
- 🌍 Protection of nations — he is the patron saint of Bosnia and Herzegovina
Feast Day
The Prophet Elijah is celebrated by members of the Carmelite Order as well as many Eastern Christians on July 20. It is a feast that honors the life of the Old Testament prophet and his fiery ascent into Heaven. For Orthodox Christians following the Julian Calendar, this falls on August 2nd in the Gregorian Calendar. This day is a major holiday in Lebanon, where the saint is known as "St. Elias the Living," because it is believed he did not die but rode his fiery chariot to heaven — a tradition celebrated with fireworks.
