This icon is a museum-inspired reproduction of an original sixteenth-century work held today in the Museum of Russian Icons in Clinton, Massachusetts.

Saint Theodore Stratelates ("the General") was a Roman military commander of the early fourth century, renowned for his courage, his physical strength, and his unwavering confession of Christ. According to tradition, he delivered his native city from a fearsome dragon that had long terrorized the surrounding countryside, slaying the beast through the power of prayer and the sign of the Cross. When Emperor Licinius launched his persecution of Christians, Theodore refused to renounce his faith despite great honor and rank, and was subjected to brutal torture before his martyrdom. He is venerated as a warrior-saint and protector of soldiers, invoked for courage, victory over adversity, and defense against unseen dangers.

Saints Flor and Lavr were twin brothers and skilled stonemasons who lived in the second century. While building a pagan temple, the brothers were so moved by their encounter with the Christian faith that they had their fellow workers destroy the idols and dedicate the structure instead to the glory of Christ, converting many through their example, their compassion, and the miracles worked through their prayers. Brought before the pagan authorities for this act, the brothers were martyred for their unwavering confession of faith. In Orthodox tradition, Flor and Lavr are especially beloved as patrons and protectors of horses, livestock, and all who work with animals, and the faithful have long sought their intercession for the health and safety of their animals and households.

Together, these three saints — the fearless warrior and the two humble craftsmen — represent different paths to the same crown of holiness: courage in battle and quiet faithfulness in daily labor, both offered wholly to Christ.

Saint Theodore Stratelates is commemorated on February 8 and June 8;

Saints Flor and Lavr are commemorated on August 18 (August 31, New Style).
