Metropolitans of Moscow: Saints Peter, Alexius, Jonah, and Philip

The holy Metropolitans of Moscow — Saints Peter, Alexius, Jonah, and Philip — are deeply venerated in the Orthodox Church for their exemplary spiritual lives, their decisive role in shaping the Russian Orthodox Church, and their courageous defense of the Christian faith. Each of these saints left an enduring mark on the spiritual and cultural history of Rus’.

Saint Peter (†1326)
Saint Peter was the first Metropolitan to establish his permanent see in Moscow, a decisive step that strengthened the city’s role as the spiritual heart of Rus’. He actively supported the construction of churches and monasteries and labored tirelessly to unite the Russian lands through faith, helping to spread and strengthen Orthodoxy.

Saint Alexius (†1378)
Saint Alexius is remembered as a wise shepherd and defender of Rus’ during a time of great trials, including the Mongol-Tatar domination. Endowed with remarkable diplomatic wisdom, he worked to reconcile rival principalities, preserve peace, and strengthen unity, all while remaining a steadfast guardian of Orthodox faith and tradition.

Saint Jonah (†1461)
Saint Jonah played a crucial role in the spiritual renewal of the Church. As Metropolitan, he labored for the reform of church life and the moral revival of the people. Known as a peacemaker, he sought reconciliation among the Russian lands and contributed significantly to the consolidation of ecclesiastical independence.

Saint Philip (†1569)
Saint Philip stands as a powerful example of moral courage and fidelity to the Gospel. Fearlessly opposing injustice, corruption, and tyranny, he publicly rebuked lawlessness even at the cost of his own life. Exiled and ultimately martyred for his uncompromising stance, he is honored as a confessor and martyr of the Church.

Together, these holy hierarchs form a spiritual foundation for the Russian Orthodox Church. Their lives of faith, sacrifice, and pastoral love continue to inspire believers, calling them to steadfast devotion to God, truth, and righteousness.
