Icon of the Mother of God of Korsun (Ephesian)

Original — Second Half of the 18th Century
Museum-Quality Reproduction | Rare Byzantine Iconography

The Korsunskaya Icon of the Mother of God (also known as Ephesian) is an ancient miracle-working image of the Most Holy Theotokos with the Christ Child, deeply venerated in the Orthodox Church. The icon belongs to the iconographic type Eleusa ("Tenderness" or "Compassion") in its abbreviated, shoulder-length variant, where the Mother of God and Christ Child are shown in a tender maternal embrace, symbolizing God's love for humanity.

The name "Korsunskaya" indicates the Byzantine, "Greek" origin of the icon. In ancient times, this designation marked the most outstanding holy images brought to Rus' through the city of Korsun (Chersonesos in Crimea)—the most important center of Christian culture through which Byzantine ecclesiastical art penetrated into Russian lands. These icons became models for Russian iconographers and spiritual sanctuaries for believers.

The Korsunskaya icon is also called the Mother of God of Ephesus (after the ancient city of Ephesus where the Most Holy Theotokos lived after Christ's Ascension), as well as Polotsk and Toropets—after the places of its glorification in Rus'.

Orthodox Christians pray before the Korsunskaya Icon of the Mother of God for:

  • Healing from illnesses and ailments
  • Protection of family and home
  • Comfort in sorrows and grief
  • Strengthening of faith and piety
  • The maternal intercession of the Theotokos

This icon, faithfully reproduced from an original of the second half of the 18th century, preserves the ancient Byzantine tradition and will be a blessed image for your home iconostasis—a connecting link between contemporary believers and the sanctuaries of the early Christian Church.
