John the Theologian was the beloved disciple of Christ — the only one among the Twelve who did not abandon his Teacher at the hour of the Crucifixion, standing at the foot of the Cross until the very end. From the Cross, the Lord entrusted His Most Holy Mother into John's care, and the apostle watched over Her as a devoted son for the rest of her earthly life.

After the Ascension, John preached for many years in Asia Minor, endured persecution, and was exiled to the island of Patmos. It was there, in a cave, that he received a great revelation about the destiny of the world, which he set down in the Book of Revelation. On Patmos he also wrote his Gospel — the most profound and mystical of the four, radiant with love and light. John is the author of three Epistles, each returning to the same truth: "God is love." He reposed in deep old age in Ephesus, the only apostle to be spared a martyr's death.

In icons, John the Theologian is depicted holding a scroll or the book of the Gospel, often with his head gently bowed — a sign of his contemplative nature and depth of prayer. The eagle is his symbol, representing the highest flight of the human spirit toward God.
