The original 19th-century icon is preserved in a private collection. This profound and complex iconographic image is rooted in Byzantine tradition from the 16th century and draws its inspiration from the words of the Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom:

“Only-Begotten Son and Word of God, Who, being immortal, for our salvation deigned to be incarnate of the Holy Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary, without change became man, and was crucified, O Christ our God, trampling down death by death, being one of the Holy Trinity, glorified with the Father and the Holy Spirit — save us.”

✨ Spiritual Meaning
This icon is a true theological confession in paint, proclaiming the mystery of Christ’s Incarnation, Passion, and Resurrection. At the center, the Holy Trinity is depicted, affirming Christ as the eternal Word, consubstantial with the Father and the Holy Spirit.

Below, Death is shown being trampled underfoot, crushing the bodies of sinners — a powerful symbol of Christ’s victory over sin and death. Scenes of the Crucifixion, the Lamentation, and Christ’s Descent into Hades further testify to His sacrificial love and redemptive power.

The “Sign” icon of the Most Holy Theotokos reminds us of the Incarnation, while at the top, God the Father Sabaoth is surrounded by angels holding the sun and the moon, symbols of heaven and cosmic order, proclaiming Christ as Lord of all creation.
