The literary basis of the iconography is the words from the Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom: “The only begotten Son and Word of God, the Immortal One, who was willing for our salvation to be incarnate from the Holy Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary, immutably made man, crucified, O Christ God, trampling down death by death, the One who is the Holy Trinity , glorified to the Father and the Holy Spirit, save us."
