This wooden Orthodox icon depicts the Virgin Mary, Theotokos of the Passion, also known as “Simeon’s Prophecy.” The image reflects the words spoken by Saint Simeon the God-Receiver when he foretold the suffering of Christ and said to His Mother: “Yes, a sword will pierce through your own soul also” (Luke 2:35).
The icon portrays the Mother of God in deep sorrow, her hands crossed upon her chest and her head bowed in quiet lamentation. A sword is directed toward her heart, symbolizing the spiritual pain she would endure during the Passion and Crucifixion of her Son.
