Icon of the Two Saints Sergius in the Great Schema

Venerable Sergius of Radonezh and Venerable Martyr Sergius of Valaam
Based on a 19th-century original
Museum Quality | Rare Orthodox Iconography

This rare Orthodox icon depicts two great Russian saints bearing the name Sergius, both shown in the Great Schema, the highest degree of monastic dedication and spiritual sacrifice.

Venerable Sergius of Radonezh (1314–1392) is one of the most revered saints of the Russian Orthodox Church, known as the Abbot of the Russian Land. He was the founder of the Holy Trinity–St. Sergius Lavra and a great intercessor for the Russian people. Through his prayers and blessing, Prince Dmitry Donskoy gained victory at the Battle of Kulikovo. Saint Sergius is venerated as a model of humility, poverty of spirit, peace-making, and unceasing prayer, having guided princes, monks, and common people alike.

Venerable Martyr Sergius of Valaam is one of the holy founders of the ancient Valaam Monastery on Lake Ladoga, a spiritual stronghold of the Russian North. According to tradition, Saints Sergius and Herman came from Greece in the 10th century to establish monastic life on the island. Saint Sergius endured martyrdom at the hands of pagans while defending the Christian faith, sealing his ascetic life with sacrificial love for Christ.

Both saints are portrayed wearing the Great Schema, adorned with crosses—symbolizing complete renunciation of the world, total devotion to God, and mystical participation in the Cross of Christ. This rare iconography emphasizes the highest ideal of Orthodox monastic holiness.

Before this icon, the faithful pray for:

  • Spiritual guidance and strengthening of faith

  • Help in prayer, repentance, and ascetic struggle

  • Protection and flourishing of monasteries

  • Peace, unity, and healing within the Church and the homeland

  • Consolation during trials and inner struggles

This icon is especially treasured by monastics, clergy, theologians, and collectors of rare Russian icons. It serves as a powerful reminder that humility, prayer, and self-sacrifice lead to true freedom and eternal life in Christ.
