Wooden Icon of the Resurrection of Christ (descent into hell)
In the center of the composition, surrounded by blue glory, is Jesus Christ, trampling underfoot the gates of hell. With his right hand He holds Adam's hand, and with his left - an eight-pointed cross. To the right of Him are the Old Testament kings, and to the left behind Adam are Eve, Abel, John the Baptist and two prophets.
The Descent of Christ into Hell is a Christian dogma that claims that after the crucifixion, Jesus Christ descended into hell and, having crushed its gates, brought his gospel sermon to the underworld, freed the souls imprisoned there and brought out of hell all the Old Testament righteous people, as well as Adam and Eve. The descent of Christ into hell is included in the Passion of Christ. The Church believes that this event occurred on the second day of Christ’s stay in the tomb and remembers this event during the Holy Saturday service.
In this icon, in the center of the composition, Christ is depicted in a white-gold oval-shaped radiance - “in glory.” He rises from the tomb, next to which the Angel meets the Myrrh-Bearing Women. In the lower scene, Christ is also depicted "in glory." He tramples underfoot the gates of hell, leads Adam out of the underworld, holding his hand. Both compositional fragments of the icon are connected by the golden diagonals of the halos of the righteous and angels, who rise from the abyss of hell to heaven. The underworld from which the righteous emerge is shown as the open red mouth of a half-fish, half-monster. The red color of the monster refers the viewer to the image of fiery Gehenna.
The lower right part of the icon depicts one of the miracles: the Appearance of Jesus Christ to the Apostles on Lake Tiberias. The fishermen had no catch at all, and Christ commanded them to sail from the shore and again cast their nets, which were immediately miraculously filled with fish.
The icon is made by printing on a wooden board. Paints are mineral, do not fade with time. The thickness of the board is 2 cm. The board is covered with primer by hand. The image is covered with wax. Each icon has a metal mount on the back side so that you can hang the icon on the wall.
You can buy the icon in three sizes:
- 13 х 12 centimeters (5,1 x 4,7 inches)
- 19 х 17 centimeters (7,5 x 6,7 inches)
