Wooden Icon of the Mother of God The Kozelshchansk (Kozelshchanskaya)

The Kozelshchansk Icon of the Mother of God was glorified in the late nineteenth century, though it is older than that. This icon is of Italian origin and was brought to Russia by one of Empress Elizabeth’s (1741-1761) maids of honor, who was Italian.

The icon became famous in connection with the healing on February 21 (March 5), 1881, by the prayer of Countess Maria, daughter of Count Vladimir Kapnist, who had been suffering from a leg disease since 1880. Before going to the doctors in Moscow, Maria prayed to the Mother of God and, according to family tradition, cleaned her robe. According to legend, immediately after the prayer, Maria felt relieved and came to Moscow to the doctors completely healthy.

In the estate of the Counts Kapnistov in the village of Kozelshchyna, a chapel was first built for the icon, and then a stone church was built, consecrated in honor of the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos. Under her in 1885, a women's community was founded, transformed on February 17 (March 1, 1891) into the Kozelshchansky Nativity of the Virgin Monastery.

The Kozelshchanskaya icon belongs to the iconographic type of Odigitria. The Infant of God is reclining in the arms of the Virgin Mary, in his right hand he holds a cross. A chalice and a liar are placed on the table next to the image, as a symbol of the sacrament of Communion.

The icon is made by printing on a wooden board. Paints are mineral, do not fade with time. The thickness of the board is 2 cm. The board is covered with soil by hand. The image is covered with wax. Each icon has a metal mount on the back side so that you can hang the icon on the wall.
