The Icon of the Mother of God “Milk Giver” (Galaktotrophousa) is one of the most tender and theologically profound images of the Virgin Mary in Orthodox Christianity. Rooted in the Byzantine iconographic tradition, this sacred image depicts the Theotokos nursing the Divine Child, revealing both the true humanity of Christ and the boundless maternal love of His Mother.

The history of this icon is closely connected with Saint Sabbas the Sanctified. Before his repose in 532, he foretold that a royal pilgrim bearing his name—Saint Sabbas of Serbia—would visit his Lavra near Jerusalem. Centuries later, this prophecy was fulfilled, and the miraculous icon was given as a blessing. Saint Sabbas brought it to Mount Athos, placing it in the Hilandar Monastery, where it gained special veneration.

Remarkably, the icon was placed to the right of the Royal Doors, a position traditionally reserved for Christ or the Holy Trinity—highlighting its exceptional spiritual significance. Over time, many miracle-working copies appeared in Russia, Greece, Mount Athos, and the Holy Land, becoming sources of healing, comfort, and help in times of need.
