Wooden Icon of the Mother of God "Deliverer from Troubles"

This Orthodox icon depicts the Mother of God “Deliverer from Troubles” (Izbavitelnitsa ot bed strazhdushchikh), a revered miracle-working Marian image associated with Mount Athos and the New Athos Simon the Canaanite Monastery.

Until July 20, 1889, the holy icon was kept on Mount Athos by the schema-monk Martinian of the Russian Monastery of Saint Panteleimon. He had received the icon from the great ascetic Hieromonk Theodulus, preserving it as a precious spiritual treasure. According to tradition, the icon had already become known for miraculous help long before its transfer to the Caucasus.

One of the earliest recorded miracles occurred in 1841, when, through prayers before this icon, the inhabitants of Sparta, Greece, were delivered from a devastating plague of locusts. Later, by the testament of Schema-Archimandrite Macarius, the icon was transferred from the Panteleimon Monastery to the New Athos Monastery.

When the icon was solemnly celebrated there for the first time, a violent storm unexpectedly cast more than a ton of fish onto the shore near the monastery—an event received by the monks as a sign of the Mother of God’s mercy and providential care.

The feast day of the icon was established on October 17 in thanksgiving for the miraculous deliverance of Emperor Alexander III and his family during the catastrophic railway accident near Borki in 1888. Less than a month before this event, the imperial family had visited the New Athos Monastery, where the emperor personally laid the foundation stone of the cathedral dedicated to Saint Panteleimon. The wonder-working icon remained in this cathedral until the monastery’s closure in 1924.

In the iconography, the Most Holy Theotokos is shown holding the Christ Child on Her right arm, while He blesses the faithful with His right hand. The image is a powerful symbol of divine protection, deliverance from calamities, and compassionate intercession for all who suffer.

Believers pray before this icon for help in dangers, relief from misfortunes, protection of family and homeland, and consolation in times of sorrow.
